Events in Koh Phan Ngan

When it comes to events, Koh Phangan is all about the parties. Dance culture took over the island ten years ago and the beat is still thumping. Although plenty of beaches remain untouched by mass tourism, almost all of them host one party or another each month, even during the low season.

Full Moon Party

The monthly Full Moon Party is the main reason for Koh Phangan's obsession with reveling. The party's global fame as one of the biggest and best beach gatherings in the world has resulted in ever-increasing number of party goers heading for Haad Rin Beach. Twelve major sound systems bash out an eclectic range of tunes along the entire length of the beach, drawing 8000 to 12,000 visitors in low season, 15,000 to 20,000 in high season and up to 30,000 at New Year.

Half and Black Moon Party

Despite the size and scope of the event. Party organizers have gradually added more to keep the crowds stomping. The Half Moon Festival takes place in a jungle venue twice a month, one week before and one week after the Full Moon Party, while the Black Moon Party fills the other gap with a brightly coloured beach rave to wind down or build up to the next big one.

Yoga Retreats

The other face of Koh Phangan is a touch less frantic, with yoga retreats and cleansing programmes dominating the events calendar. The Sanctuary on Had Tien Beach regularly invites renowned gurus and experts in fields as diverse as herbalism and  shamanistic rituals to enlighten its guests.

Marathon

In addition, the Phangan Marathon is a new event held on the full moon in October to highlight a more healthy approach to the monthly celebration. It attracts both Thai and foreign runners.

Thai festivals

On the Thai side of life. Songkran New Year festival is celebrated with gusto in the island's towns and villages. Similarly, Loi Krathong - the Thai festival of light in November, brings fireworks and lanterns to the Koh Phangan skies and banana leaf floats to the waters.
